General Questions
What is Broadband?

Broadband means a high-speed transmission. The term commonly refers to Internet access via cable or wireless, which is as much as 400 times faster than dial-up.

Am I always connected, or do I have to connect each time I use Seaside Communications Broadband Service?

When you are connected to the Internet with Seaside High Speed, your computer is connected as long as it is turned on. This means no more dialling up or busy signals. With Seaside Communications, you always have access to the Internet.

What kind of equipment do you use and how is it setup at my home?

We use a Motorola Wireless Canopy system which includes a Subscriber Module and antenna. The whole system is mounted on your home with a satellite dish bracket. A thick cable called a “CAT5 Ethernet Cable” is then run from the antenna into your house and connects to your computer through its power adapter.

What is Broadband Internet with a Motorola Canopy™ system?

The Canopy™ system is a wireless broadband technology that provides high-speed Internet access to residential and commercial customers located in less urbanized areas. The system is comprised of three major components: Access Point (AP), Subscriber Module (SM) and the Backhaul Unit.

How does Seaside Wireless High Speed Internet with Canopy technology differ from other broadband services?

While other broadband services use technologies such as phone lines, cable lines and satellite, the canopy system uses wireless radio signals allowing the service provider to reach into remote communities with affordable high speed internet service.

How fast is high speed wireless internet service compared to dial-up?

Our standard Wireless service is approximately 15 times faster than dial-up and offers speeds up to 1.5Mbps.
Do you include any other services with your Wireless Internet such as e-mail?

Yes, we offer our customers up to 5 e-mail accounts, access to webmail, and 10 Megabytes of personal web space, at no additional cost.

Is your Wireless Internet Service completely wire free?

All wireless systems have to connect to a cable at some point. Our wireless service is only “wireless” from the Access Point to the antenna on your home. A cable is used to connect your antenna to the power supply that plugs into your computer.

Can common household devices interfere with my Wireless Internet?

Anything operating on the 900Mhz frequency band such as some older cordless telephones and baby monitors might cause interference with your service. That being said, newer wireless products are Wi-Fi friendly and are typically designed to behave in a manner which causes no interference.

Will I be able to connect more than one computer to your Wireless Internet?

Yes, if you purchase a router and set it up with the directions given to you by the manufacturer more than one PC can connect to at the same time. If you have any trouble or difficulty hooking up a router we suggest contacting the manufacturer’s tech support.

Can bad weather conditions interrupt my Wireless Service?

Due to the nature of the technology some extreme weather conditions may temporarily block our equipment's ability to properly send and receive an internet signal. This is an unavoidable part of any Wireless technology.

Installation

Installation
What is meant by line of sight?

There must be a clear line between your residence and the AP on the tower which is clear from obstructions such as other homes, barns, trees, etc to ensure optimal signal

Why do I need a technician to do a site survey?

A site survey must be completed to ensure the signal or frequency which is transmitted from the AP is of suitable strength to provide a stable connection at your residence.

How long does it take until a site survey can be conducted?

Once you contact our Billing & Sales Office and provide your name and civic address, the site survey can normally be completed within 5 to 10 business days. The site survey itself takes about 15 - 30 minutes and is completed on the exterior of your home only.

What is the process in getting a site survey conducted?

If you are interested in having a site survey completed, after your community has been placed under the Active Communities Covered list on the Availability page of this site, you would contact our Billing & Sales Office to provide them with your name and civic address.

Our Wireless Dispatcher would then contact you with a date for your site survey and installation, should you wish to have the service installed upon successful completion of your site survey. If, due to prior commitments, you are unable to be at home during the site survey the Network Technician can complete the test in your absence, provided we have your permission to be on your property and home. We will notify you of the status of the site survey within 24 hours of its completion.

Is there a charge for a site survey?

No there is no charge for a site survey, if you choose to install your service after a successful Site Survey then your Installation fee is $99.95

Can I get other services with Wireless Internet from Seaside?

At this time we offer the Wireless Internet Package which includes access to the Internet, 5 e-mail address, and 10 MB of web space.

How secure is the system?

Wireless Internet is as secure as any other Internet service such as DSL or Cable Internet. The signal you receive wirelessly from the tower to the subscriber module on your home is encrypted and our SM's can act as a NAT router adding an additional piece of security not always offered by other providers.

What goes on my house? Do you drill holes?

We use a Motorola Wireless Canopy system which includes a Subscriber Module and antenna. The whole system is mounted on your home with a satellite dish bracket.

A thick cable called a “CAT5 Ethernet Cable” is then run from the antenna into your house through a single hole and connects to your computer through its power adapter.

Sample Customer Installation

Why can my neighbour get wireless internet and I can't?

Each property is individual in its geographic location and the terrain at each site may affect the site survey results, this is why it is essential to complete a site survey at every residence before an installation can occur.

For example, your neighbor may be at a higher elevation and therefore has clearer line of sight to the AP or perhaps there is a large stand of trees or hills between your residence and the AP and issues like these can potentially degrade the quality of the signal which reaches your property.

However, Seaside High Speed does have a commitment to provide 100% internet access to currently unserved rural regions of Nova Scotia.

This means that if you are in an area where the signal from existing infrastructure will not reach your property we are committed to implement an alternate solution to connect you with service in a reasonable time frame.
